Robert L. Baker, age 85 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2018 at Landmark Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

Born March 6, 1933 near Atlanta, Missouri, the son of Rev. A.S.J. and Anna Lela (McDuffee) Baker. On September 15, 1957 in La Plata, Missouri he was united in marriage to Alma M. Bowen who survives.

Also surviving is one son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Brenda Baker of La Plata, Missouri; one daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Dean Retherford of Foosland, Illinois; one sister, Mary Skinner of Columbia, Missouri; five grandchildren, Ashley Shoemaker, Dusty Baker, Nick, Ben, and Claire Retherford; two great-granddaughters Sloan and Flynt Shoemaker; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Joe Al Baker; one sister, Dorothy Cupp; three half-sisters, Anna Corrine Davis, Kitty Lou Redd, and Gladys Farmer; and one half-brother, Stines Baker.

Bob lived most all of his life in the Atlanta and Sue City communities where he farmed. He was a 1951 graduate of Atlanta High School and served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. Bob had served on the Northeast Missouri CO-OP Board, the La Plata School Board and had been a 4-H leader. He was a member of the Macon County Cattleman’s Association, La Plata American Legion Post #282, and the La Plata Community Presbyterian Church where he had served as an Elder for many years.

Bob enjoyed going to draft horse pulls, the Farm Progress Show, local and state fairs, and his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri. Burial will be in the La Plata Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 19, 2018 with the family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Travis Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers memorials in memory of Robert L. Baker may be made to American Legion Post #282 or to La Plata Bulldog Backers. They may be sent to or left at Travis Funeral Chapel, 125 S. Church St., La Plata, Missouri 63549.
