Jerry Odell Sylvara
March 30, 1941 - October 1, 2025
Jerry O’Dell Sylvara was born in Brookfield, Missouri on March 30, 1941 the son of Richard and Olive Ruby (Nee) Lefler Sylvara. Jerry was married to Pam Baker Sylvara for 17 years, from the union they welcomed three children, Dr John Tod (Dr Karen) Sylvara, of Kirksville, Missouri, Tina Loree Rinaldi of Pensacola, Florida, and Jason Troy Sylvara of Des Moines, Iowa, all surviving. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, John and James “Jimmy” Sylvara, Jaycie Sylvara, Jordan, Jon, and Joey Rinaldi, four great-grandchildren Sophia, Jonah, Sienna, and Clara.
Jerry spent his early childhood years living with his beloved aunt Goldie Sylvara in Chariton, Iowa. He left Chariton and relocated to Kirksville, Missouri where he lived with his mother and step father and began his education at Ophelia Parrish Junior High. Jerry graduated from Kirksville High School with the class of 1959 as class president. He earned his B.S. and Masters degree from Northeast Missouri State, now Truman State University in Kirksville followed by three years in the United States Marine Corps. Jerry spent many years coaching and serving in school administration in the St. Louis area, retiring to LaPlata. He was well known in athletics as a Kirksville High School football star. He was also known for his lifelong passion for golf and his unique personality. Jerry spent his 84 years living life to the fullest and will be fondly remembered by many.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents and stepfather Lester Stewart, two sisters, Leona Sylvara Moore and Betty Sylvara Taylor, one brother Donald “Red” Sylvara, and step brother Jim Stewart.
Following Jerry’s wishes there will be no services. There will be a Celebration of Life on Oct 17, 2025 from 4-7p at the Kirksville Country Club in Kirksville, Missouri.
