Stephen A. Sawyer

Stephen A. Sawyer, age 74 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2023 at his home.
Born March 30, 1949 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, the son of Truman and Peggy (Jenkins) Sawyer. On July 22, 1972 in Williamsburg, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Doris Brockshus who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Chad (Katy) Sawyer, Jeremy (Tabitha) Sawyer, and Dusty (Aimee) Sawyer, all of La Plata, Missouri; one brother, Kevin Sawyer of South Fulton, Tennessee; eight grandchildren, Delaney, Emery, Cash, Cy, Tristen, Emily, Katie, and Connor; and one great grandson, Creed.
His parents preceded him in death.
Steve was a 1968 graduate of Jackson High School. He was awarded a football scholarship and attended Centerville Community College in Centerville, Iowa and later continued his education at Northeast Missouri State University. Steve was employed for 36 years at Hollister Inc. in Kirksville and later owned and operated Sawyer Trucking. Steve served as mayor of the City of La Plata for a number of years and was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Kirksville.
Steve enjoyed truck pulling, riding motorcycles, hunting, fishing, spending time on the farm, and most of all going to his children’s and grandchildren’s ballgames and rodeos.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 7, 2023 with the family receiving friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the La Plata Christian Church in La Plata, Missouri.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2023 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Kirksville, Missouri. Burial will be in the La Plata Cemetery.
Memorials in memory of Steve may be made to La Plata Fire Department and/or La Plata Men’s Golf Association. They may be sent to or left at Travis Funeral Chapel, 125 S. Church St., La Plata, MO 63549.
