Phyllis Darlene Carter
September 23, 1932 - February 25, 2022
Phyllis Darlene Carter passed away on February 25, 2022 in Kirksville, Missouri. She was born on September 23, 1932 in Sue City. Phyllis was born, raised and lived her entire life living east of La Plata, Missouri. She was the only child of Cleophas and Floy Kautz.
Phyllis was a 1950 graduate of La Plata High School. She married Jesse “Caryle” Carter of rural La Plata in Cheyenne, Wyoming on August 7, 1952. They both lived together in their home on the farm until his death less than two months prior to her passing.
Together, the Carters purchased a farm and raised three children, Angus cattle, corn and soybeans. Grandma Phyllis was a pragmatic woman who was serious about her farm work that also included raising sheep, hogs and dairy cows over the years. Like many in her generation, she gardened, canned and sewed. Grandma’s no-fuss approach to life passed a lot of wisdom to her three children that are still active in farming today. She enjoyed watching her family participate in the county, district and state fairs and was supportive of each one of her offspring.
Phyllis’ work on the farm meant rare trips into town for groceries to feed men working in the field. She treasured the family tradition of Sunday lunches. She also loved 4-H and served as a project leader. Phyllis and her neighbor ladies also met regularly as the “MI Club.”
Survivors include one daughter, Cathy Baker and her late husband, Robert W. Baker of Atlanta, and two sons: Mike (Mary) Carter and Daryl (Wendy) Carter, both of La Plata. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Sharon (Duane) Pennington, Daron (Brandy) Baker, Aaron (Erica) Baker, Jason Carter, Evan Carter, Jesse Carter, and Megan and Daniel Ellyson. Phyllis was also a great-grandmother to Christina, Ashlea, Aislynn, Owen, Paislea, Bella, Brody, Brynlee, Bright and Quenton. She was also survived by one sister-in-law, Marjorie Weber of Kirksville.
There will be a private family service 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2022. Entombment will be in the La Plata Community Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Community Mausoleum of La Plata.
