Dorothy I. Burton
June 22, 1931 - January 5, 2022
Dorothy Kellam Burton, age 90 of Macon, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at the Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon, Missouri.
Born June 22, 1931 in Elmer, Missouri she was the daughter of Fred and Jennie (Shoop) Kellam. On September 11, 1955 she was joined in marriage to Robert “Bob” Burton.
Surviving are two daughters, Cinda Burton and Charlotte Moore, both of Macon, Missouri; two granddaughters and their husbands Melissa and Travis Cook, and Janessa and Austin Gaughan; four great grandchildren Nolan and Colin Cook, and Nora and Maggie Gaughan all of Columbia, Missouri; several nieces, nephews and cousins including nephew Lloyd Demory of LaPlata, Missouri, great niece Dana Demory Ruble and her three daughters; niece Betty Cook, great nieces Pam Gierich and Patti Bailey, their children and grandchildren all of Joliet, Illinois; Ben and Nancy Coleman; Scott and Dee Coleman, Charley Ann and Andijane; Brian and Amy Coleman, Elizabeth, Naomi and Rebekah all of Callao, Missouri.
Proceeding her in death was her husband Robert “Bob” Burton, her parents, four siblings and their spouses; Hazel Faulkner, Jake Demory, Opal and Everett Dennis, and Floyd and Zelma Kellam.
After the death of her mother and the ill health of her father, Dorothy and Floyd ages 5 and 3 were raised by their sister and husband, Opal and Everett Dennis on a farm outside of Elmer, Missouri. She graduated from Elmer High School.
Dorothy and Bob farmed for many years north of Callao, Missouri. She raised a large garden each year, raised chickens and sold eggs. She also worked as a cook at the LaSalle Boarding Home, Bevier, Missouri and the Callao School District.
She was a member of the Bevier Baptist Church, Bevier, Missouri. She taught Sunday School and helped with Bible School in her young adult life. She enjoyed spending time with her daughters, granddaughters and their families. She enjoyed attending the granddaughters’ school, sport and 4-H events and being an “available to help in any way grandma”. She enjoyed gardening, canning, crafting and embroidery. She also enjoyed making baby quilts for the Cooks, Gaughans and Colemans.
Dorothy enjoyed spending time with the Coleman Crew, visits from the Joliet Gang and visits and ice cream treats from nephew Gary Hughes and wife Diana of Alexandria, Virginia.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made in memory of Dorothy to Chariton Cemetery or Easter Seals Midwest. They may be mailed to Travis Funeral Chapel, 125 S Church St., LaPlata, Missouri 63549.
