John A. Cavett

John A. Cavett, age 91 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Friday, January 27, 2016 at the La Plata Nursing Home.
Born June 13, 1925 in Colchester, Illinois, the son of Arthur Allen and Nora May (Stump) Cavett. On February 11, 1967 he was united in marriage to Virginia Canterbury who preceded him in death on September 25, 2005.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters, and four brothers.
Survivors include a niece Carolyn Lewis of Mt. Sterling, Illinois and a nephew, Laurel Hoelscher of Burlington, Iowa.
John served his country from 1943 to 1963, first in the United States Army and then the United States Air Force. He first joined the 179th Regiment of the 45th Infantry Division as a replacement at the battle of Anzio in central Italy. John was later a part of the invasion of Southern France on August 15, 1944. He became a prisoner of war in November 1944 and was liberated in June 1945. Soon after W.W. II, John joined the newly formed United States Air Force. He was stationed in Germany and later in Okinawa during the Korean War.
John enjoyed camping, riding his Ford tractor in parades, newspaper puzzles, going to the Fly Wheel Reunion, and wood working.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri. Officiating will be Pastor Karen Coy.
Burial with military honors will be in the La Plata Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 31, 2017 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata.
