Harold L. Smith

Harold L. Smith, 84 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Saturday, December 31, 2016 at the La Plata Nursing Home.
Born August 26, 1932 in Mountain View, Missouri, the son of Emin Verl and Mildred C. (Plumlee) Smith. On February 22, 1964 in La Plata, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Wanda Lea Gregory who preceded him in death on December 12, 2009.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Mary Lou Laird; and three brothers, Jim, Donald, and Frank Smith.
Surviving is one son, Kyle Smith of La Plata, Missouri; one daughter and son-in-law, Karla and Billie Hettinger of Brashear, Missouri; two brothers, Richard Smith of Raymore, Missouri and Joe Smith and wife Kathy of Lawson, Missouri; one sister, Sara Epperson of St. Clair, Missouri; five grandchildren, Eric and Crescent Smith, Stachia and Frankie Vorhees, Toni and Ryan Tuggle, Tabitha and Rosco Hupfeld, and Candace and Jamie Harrington; and thirteen great grandchildren, Dylan and Dalton Vorhees, Nikiah and Beau Smith, Ella, Madisyn, Hunter, and Haylea Tuggle, Kalie Lene, Emma and Aubree Newland, Henry Hupfeld, and Shelby Crumpler.
Harold was a graduate of Brashear High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. Most of his adult life was spent on his farm northeast of La Plata where he farmed. He was a member of the La Plata American Legion and La Plata Christian Church. Harold enjoyed fishing, camping, and spending time with his family.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at the La Plata Christian Church. Officiating will be Pastor Scott McNay. Burial will be in Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville, Missouri. Pallbearers will be Eric Smith, Jesse Peavler, Justin Coy, Jamie Harrington, Ryan Tuggle, and Rosco Hupfeld. Honorary Pallbearers will be Candace Harrington, Tabitha Hupfeld, Toni Tuggle, Crescent Smith, and Stachia Vorhees.
Visitation will be Monday, January 2, 2017 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri.
