John Howerton Holmes

John Howerton Holmes, age 92 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.
Born July 2, 1923 in Novelty, Missouri, he was the son of Andrew Vance and Zelma Florence (Howerton) Holmes. On November 25, 1943 in Hannibal, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Jessie Elaine Walker who survives.
Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory Walker and Penny Holmes of Lutz, Florida and William Paul and Sandi Holmes of Quincy, Illinois; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth Ann and Douglas Staufenbiel of Arnold, Missouri; one sister, Kathryn Walker of La Plata, Missouri; six grandchildren, Andrew, Christina, Arthur John, Camilla, Travis, and Amanda; ten great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
His parents; one infant daughter, Sara Jane; one brother, Andrew Vance Holmes; two sisters, Helen Bailey and Caroline Wagner; and one brother-in-law, Stanley Walker, preceded him in death.
John lived and farmed most all of his life in Knox County, Missouri. In 1994 he moved to La Plata, Missouri. He was employed with USDA for a number of years. He was a member of the La Plata Masonic Lodge No. 237 AF & AM. John enjoyed having a good time with friends and family.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri. Inurnment will be in the Locust Hill Cemetery, west of Novelty, Missouri.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 9, 2016 with the family receiving friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri.
