James William Sparrow

James William Sparrow, age 88 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.
Born May 19, 1924 in Atlanta, Missouri, he was the son of Jake and Grace (Cunningham) Sparrow. On November 17, 1944 in England he married Gwendoline D. (Hook) Drury who preceded him in death on December 6, 2007.
Also preceding in death were his parents and two sisters, Marie Shores and Margaret Hirt.
Surviving are three daughters, Sharon Dore and husband Randy of La Plata, Missouri, Judy Berrey of Kansas City, Missouri, and Jackie Landreth and husband David of Wellsville, Kansas; one son, Brian Drury and wife Mary of Oak Grove, Missouri; twelve grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and several great great-grandchildren.
James attended Atlanta High School and later served in the United States Army during W.W. II. He was awarded six Bronze Stars, the European Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, and the President Citation. James loved fishing, garage sales, gardening, and passing out candy at the nursing home.
He will be laid to rest at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013 at the La Plata Community Mausoleum in La Plata, Missouri. Officiating will be Pastor Sheila Swafford.
Visitation will be Friday, March 29, 2013 with the family receiving friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri.
