Jane Louise Barnett

Jane L. Barnett, 74, of La Plata, formerly of Kirksville and Columbia died
Thursday, April 8, 2011 at the La Plata Nursing Home.
Born July 12, l936 in Kirksville, she was the daughter of Otho and Mauretta Baity Barnett. Jane graduated from KHS in l954 and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Kirksville State Teachers College (now Truman State University) in 1957 and 1958 respectively. She also did post-graduate work at the University of Iowa and received a Specialists Certificate from the University of Missouri-Columbia in l973. She taught in the state of Missouri for 35 years, including elementary physical education in Affton, Missouri and Health and Exercise Science at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri until her retirement in l993.
Survivors include her sister Mary and husband Jim Priebe of Burlington, IA, niece Susan and husband Ken Thomas of La Plata, niece Sara Linder of Iowa City, IA, great-nephew Aaron Thomas of La Plata and great-niece Annika Linder of Iowa City, IA. Jane is also survived by family friends, Mrs. Minnie Dickerson of Salisbury, Missouri; Sarah Borntreger of La Plata, her former students, and her La Plata Nursing Home family, where she had lived since 2006.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, step-mother Martha Barnett Boekemeier, and all of those family members listed in the detailed genealogy records Jane enjoyed researching and maintaining.
Jane loved to visit with people and her unique sense of humor led her on many adventures. She was well known for directing traffic in the main hallway of the Pershing Building at Truman State University, often issuing unsolicited advice that helped to shape the lives of many students. After moving to La Plata, Jane enjoyed membership in the MI Club. Jane had a passion for genealogy, traveling, sports, and the Iowa Hawkeye athletic program.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 13, 2011 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at Travis Funeral
Chapel in La Plata, Missouri followed by a graveside committal service at 2:00 p.m. in the La Plata Cemetery.
