John Alan Meeks

John Alan Meeks, age 84 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.
Born May 11, 1926 in La Plata, Missouri, he was the son of John Wesley and Dora Pauline (Allen) Meeks. On January 1, 1992 in St. Charles, Missouri, he married Blanche (Mercer) Stone who survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Sherry Collins of Ft. Worth, Texas; two step-daughters, Vickie Sue Craver of Vallejo, California and Jane Spann of Atlanta, Georgia; two step-sons, Matthew Stone of Evansville, Indiana and Chris Stone of Wentzville, Missouri; two brothers, Richard Meeks and his wife Virginia of Concord, California and James Meeks and his wife Audrey of Napa, California; one sister, Jo Ellen Rollins of Napa, California; two grandchildren, Disty Arnet and husband Tom and Shaun Christopher Collins and wife Sarah; five step-grandchildren, Tiffanie Craver, George Stone, Grace Stone, Paul Spann, and Allison Spann; and four great grandchildren, Justin Arnet, Jaycee Arnet, Grace Collins, and Hunter Collins.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, Ann Marie Wright, and one step-son John Vernon Meeks.
John was a 1944 graduate of the La Plata High School. He served in the United States Army during W.W. II and the Korean War. Most of his life was spent in the Napa, California area where he was employed as a welder at the Mare Island Navel Shipyards until his retirement. In 1992 he moved back to La Plata where he was a very active member of the La Plata Lions Club and previous member of the La Plata Baptist Church. John enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 1, 2011 at the Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri. Officiating will be the Reverend Stan East.
Burial will be in the La Plata Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Everett Ruby, Gary Smith, Richard Burns, Gary Cunningham, Duane Turner, and Clyde Burch.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 1, 2011 with the family receiving friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Travis Funeral Chapel, La Plata, Missouri.
