Alma M. Baker, age 89, of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the La Plata Nursing Home in La Plata, Missouri.

Born September 15, 1935, in La Plata, Missouri, the daughter of Clarence and Olive (Ellis) Bowen. On September 15, 1957, in La Plata, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Robert L. Baker who preceded her in death on September 16, 2018.

Also preceding her in death were her parents.

Surviving is one son, Randy (Brenda) Baker of La Plata, Missouri; one daughter, Sue (Dean) Retherford of Foosland, Illinois; five grandchildren, Ashley (Luke) Shoemaker, Dusty (Haley) Baker, Nick (Holly) Retherford, Ben and Claire Retherford; three great-grandchildren, Sloan and Flynt Shoemaker and Meredith Retherford; and one sister-in-law, Mary Skinner of Columbia, Missouri.

Alma lived most of her life in the Sue City and La Plata communities. She was a 1953 graduate of La Plata High School, an active member of the La Plata Community Presbyterian Church, and La Plata American Legion Auxiliary. Alma was very involved on the planning committee that organized the building of the La Plata Nursing Home. She served on the first La Plata Nursing Home Board. Alma worked at Laughlin Hospital in Kirksville and later at the La Plata Nursing Home as an L.P.N. She was very proud of her two granddaughters becoming R.N.’s.

Alma loved going to her family’s ballgames. Her family will miss her chocolate chip cookies!

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri. Visitation will be 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Burial will be in La Plata Cemetery.

Memorials in memory of Alma may be made to La Plata Nursing Home or to the donor’s choice. They may be sent to or left at Travis Funeral Chapel, 125 S. Church St., La Plata, MO 63549.
